on what is ours

ATP_0787
"Because secrets do not increase in value if kept in a gore-ian lockbox, because one's past is either made useful or else mutates and becomes cancerous. We share things for the obvious reasons: it makes us feel un-alone, it spreads the weight over a larger area, it holds the possibility of making our share lighter. And it can work either way - not simply as a pain-relief device, but, in the case of not bad news but good, as a share-the-happy-things-I've-seen/lessons-I've-learned vehicle. Or as a tool for simple connectivity for its own sake, a testing of waters, a stab at engagement with a mass of strangers."
- Dave Eggers from A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

I, like you, don't know what I'm doing all the time.
I, like you, cannot see this life from every angle.
I don't know how to do what I do sometimes and often after I do it, I don't like it.
Sometimes I surprise myself with work that I didn't know was in me.
I cringe when I think of everything I don't know about life and other times I feel like I know all I should right now.

I don't want to be boxed up so tightly that life and joy are kept out of what I do. I don't want to take myself, or my work as a photographer so seriously that I am more photographer than human, more business owner than friend, more editor than listener. What is the point in that? Is that really what we should be spending our time moving towards? To produce rather than to create? Is that why I left the cubicle? I want to make images that reflect something of love, tragedy, brilliance, and irony. I want to listen. I want my images to reflect intangible interactions and a part of life that my clients don't even realize is already gone.

Is this not the most beautiful couple? I'll answer that for you, yes they are. Let me tell you what makes this couple beautiful to me. All engaged couples are "in love" but you only need a few minutes with Annie and Curt to know that they love each other. They love to be together and that makes it easy to be around them which means its easy to find things to photograph about them, for them. I can't wait for their St. George Christmas wedding and I am so happy to be their photographer.

Remember Shannon and Garrett? Well, I like them a lot and I really like their three beautiful daughters. Working with repeat clients is such a joy to me, especially when they are as appreciative and laid-back as this family. We were lucky enough to be invite to a private estate in Provo canyon just before the Autumn cold took all the color from the trees.

What a wonderful day to get married at temple square- a Tuesday in October. Heidi and Scott's wedding was the only one scheduled in the morning and it was so fun that they, together with their families, were able to have the grounds all to themselves.

One of my favorite things about working with Heidi and Scott was that they trusted me when I said that the photos they would value the most would be images of them. Between their luncheon and reception we spent an hour and a half together for a bride and groom portrait session. We were able to find some beautiful locations that inspired great images and I am so happy so share them with all of you, though it was sooooo hard choosing . I love these photos and I love what I do.

Congratulations Heidi and Scott and thank you for making me a part of your big day.

Rashel and I went to high school together and haven't seen each other since so I was naturally very excited when Rashel hinted to her maiden name. One of the great things about being a photographer is the chance it gives me to reacquaint with old friends and of course make new ones. Meeting her two adorable girls and her witty husband made me happy because Rashel is happy and that makes my job both happy and easy! Thank you you two.

The last minutes of any session are always my favorite. The clients have warmed to me, the light is falling, and I reach the height of my creative mood. Bella and Peter sat in the car while I took their parents for some couple photos and while I worked, I glanced back at them several times, playing together and the more I did the more I remembered when I was a little kid, playing in the car with my little brother. I remember my former thoughts about the magic of driving and how in awe of the powerful adult world I once was. I empathized with those two Harmon babies and wished they could stay small and in awe.

The light was perfect and as I walked over to the car, readying my camera, I hoped the kids would ignore me. I hoped that the site of my camera wouldn't cue poses and camera smiles. I wanted to get them as they were. Luck was on my side, and with bedtime coming they couldn't have cared less about me or my camera. And that made my day.
